Bulgarian rose oil is one of the symbols of our country, and Bulgarian rose oil is famous all over the world. Rose oil has been known since ancient times for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, rejuvenating, and nourishing effects. The delicate fragrant aroma is a delight for the senses and at the same time reduces the level of stress hormones. Due to its unique therapeutic properties and high price, rose oil has been called “liquid gold”. It is extremely expensive because a huge amount of rose flowers are needed for each milliliter.

The origin of name Rose (in Latin “Rosa”) comes from the Greek word “roden”, which means red. In our country it is also known by the Turkish name – gül, as well as trendafil – from Greek “Trindaphill” meaning – 30 leaves. Since ancient times, the fragrance of a rose has inspired poets and lovers. The ancient Greek poetess Sappho proclaimed the rose the “queen of flowers” as early as 600 BC.

The rose was brought to Bulgarian lands from Asia centuries ago. Thanks to the specific climatic and soil conditions in our country, the Bulgarian oil-bearing rose is distinguished by a characteristic and strong aroma and active ingredients, which determine the highest quality of the extracted rose oil.

The production of rose oil in our country began in the middle of the 19th century, with Bulgaria becoming the main supplier to the world market. The so-called Rose Valley stands out, in the area between Pavel Banya, Kazanlak, Karlovo, and Strelcha. Every year at the end of May and the beginning of June in the Valley of Roses, the picking of roses begins, accompanied by folk customs, rituals, and celebrations. Rose picking is done by hand and starts early in the morning to preserve as much as possible the aroma and precious ingredients of the flowers and to extract them later during the distillation.

The proximity of our oil-bearing gardens to the Ecomaat Distillery allows a quick delivery of the plant raw materials immediately after harvesting, as well as immediate processing, which is of utmost importance for the quality parameters of the Rose essential oil produced. The purity and therapeutic properties of Rose oil also contribute to the 100% natural cultivation of the plants according to the principles of organic farming and strict, agroecological standards in the industry. The strict control of every production stage of the production of essential oil – from the plant to the packaging of the product, guarantees the highest quality.

Curious: A story about Queen Victoria of England and the Bulgarian rose

For the rest of her life, Queen Victoria used only Fleurs de Bulgarie perfume. She became the godmother of the exquisite Creed fragrance, developed especially for her by order of her husband, Prince Albert. She came up with its name herself, realizing that the unique aroma is due to the Bulgarian rose oil included in its formula.

“This time Mr. Creed was holding the little bottle which he had brought back with him after his historic journey to Egypt last year. In the market of Cairo, he had stopped for a moment in front of the essence shop of a young Arab who knew English. Mr. Creed remained there all afternoon, listening to the salesman’s stories. They came to the jar on the third shelf, which appeared to be filled with an amber-colored oil. The salesman generously opened it and gave it to him to smell. Mr. Creed drifted off, inhaling that unknown rich smell of luxury. The seller told him that he bought this jar when they went with other merchants to one of the great fairs on the other side of the Mediterranean, in the lands where the Bulgarians live. There grew the roses from which the Bulgarians made this oil and they sold dearly and overpriced, but the merchants valued this commodity. The Kadens bought a lot of it, no matter how expensive it was. They put it in the soaps, in the water when they bathed or when they washed, they scented their hair, their clothes, and their houses on holidays. Mr. Creed frowned slightly, trying to remember what he had heard about the Bulgarians. And it wasn’t much…”
