The herb Calendula has been used in folk medicine since ancient times. Because of the plant’s epithelial-forming and protective properties, it is often used in skin care products with antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and skin-healing effects.
The botanical name “Calendula” comes from the Latin word “calendae” meaning little calendar, probably because it opens its petals in the morning and closes them at the end of the day. In English, the name “Marigold” is associated with the Virgin Mary. His name in Bulgarian means “not unfading“.
In addition to skin care products, calendula is used as a medicinal herb for tea as well as in cooking. It has been used to color cheeses and oils since the Middle Ages and was a substitute for saffron. In Hindu culture, marigold is used to decorate statues and is a famous fabric dye. Calendula was used in the ancient Aztec and Mayan civilizations and is still included in the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico.
